Mayor Adams Was In Sunset Park For Questions

Mayor Adams had a community meeting with Sunset Park on July 24th. People in Sunset Park had a lot of problems that local leaders like Senator Gounardes and NY Council representative, Alexa Aviles should have helped the people with.

Mayor Adams did his best to answer the people’s questions and provide solutions. People didn’t like that only one person from each table could get up and speak. The table decided which person spoke. The Mayor also took questions and said his staff would answer all of them.

1) A Sunset Park resident stood up and said he couldn’t take his family to Sunset Park because men were sitting around, drinking and doing drugs. The man said the park is unsanitary. They called 311, the police and the city council representative. The man said he goes to the park on 19th Street or to Bay Ridge with his family. The Mayor said he will go to the park and come up with a plan.

2) The sports field is used by private groups and children from Sunset Park can not play there. A child spoke about this! Very sad!

3) Summer Rising did not have enough seats for the community. The Mayor said he believes structured learning all year. The Mayor said they had 110,000 seats for Summer Rising, but there is not enough money for this.

4) The mayor said he will allow extended use of school buildings more so non-profits do not need to pay for space.

5) A woman asked: What steps has the Mayor taken to lower the cost of living? Families are leaving New York and schools are losing money and teachers. The Mayor said that they brought down the cost of childcare with Albany. They provide fair fares for the subways. *The woman wanted more from the Mayor.

6) A young man asked why so many programs were underfunded while the police received eleven billion. The Mayor said he is going to make the city safe.

7) One man asked why the police were beating street vendors on 5th Avenue and chasing people out of the park who are selling food. The resident said the vendors don’t have the paperwork because NYC doesn’t want to give the paperwork. The Mayor said, “We respond to what communities ask for.” (Meaning if people are breaking the law, they will be asked to leave the park.)

8) One Sunset Park resident said that when people ask the police officers for a translator, they are laughed at and they are not given a translator.

9) One resident said that Sunset Park has been forgotten and people no longer feel safe. The Mayor said that at Townhalls, he heard people ask about being safe.

10) A resident asked about the rent increase by the real estate board. Mayor Adams said that he can not have property owners losing their homes.

11) A resident asked for more money for crossing guards in Sunset Park because the streets are not safe.

12) A Sunset Park resident asked the Mayor about short-term rentals to make money and fines.

13) A resident asked how can Sunset Park make streets safer for pedestians, cyclists and cars?

14) A Redhook resident asked what the Mayor could do in the next 30 days to improve the air quality in Redhook. The response from RIT Aggarwala was not good at answering the woman’s question. He said, “continuing what we are doing” and over time, more air conditioning. He then admitted that there is not a lot that can be done in 30 days – except masks. The woman requested air purifiers for NYCHA!
