NYC Council Voted for a Street to Be Named After Elijah Muhammad

NYC Council voted to change the name of 129 street names this year. That’s pretty excessive. (News)

There should be a limit of five people per borough each year. We don’t need to rename every street in NYC.

I watched the video of NYC Council voting (See here – around 35 minutes).

The Councilmembers didn’t take the time or care needed for 129 names. Some council members spoke about their honorees before the voting began, but many Council members waited until it was their turn to vote to mention their honorees.

Honoring well-known NYC heroes, like Police Officer Wilbert Mora, who died protecting NY’ers is important.

Councilmember Kristin Richardson Jordan, who represents Harlem submitted Elijah Muhammad’s name. During the meeting, Jordan said: “It is actually not OK to erase black leaders who are not pleasing to white people.”

Elijah Muhammad was a leader of the Nation of Islam. Newspapers and Jewish publications have shared some inappropriate things Muhammad has said about Jewish people.

While the people should be diverse and don’t need to be pleasing to all people, they should be people who helped build NYC and didn’t spread hate.

NYC Council members wanted to get their streets named after their honorees, so they allowed Elijah Muhammad’s name. That’s the problem with doing 129 names at once.

Why don’t the people in Harlem get to vote if they want this name on their street?

Maybe Mayor Adams will veto his name?

If not, in a decade or so, a smart and loving child will grow up and get rid of Jordan and NYC Council’s mistake. Children wouldn’t allow someone who has promoted hate to receive recognition.
