On Saturday, July 17, 2021, Than Than Htwe took the train to Manhattan to go to a doctor’s appointment. She was accompanied by her son.
As the two walked out of the Canal Street station, at 10:45 am, 52-year-old David Robinson attempted to steal Mrs. Htwe’s son’s backpack. Robinson pulled down on the bag and both Than Than and her son fell down the stairs.
“Robinson told police he heard Than Than Htwe’s head crack.” (Source)
Than Than was brought to the hospital and operated on. She was in a coma and died eleven days later.
David Robinson was arrested and charged with manslaughter in September 2021. His bail was set at $100,000 in cash or a $75,000 insurance company bond or a $75,000 bond-surety-partially secured.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s allowed Robinson to plead guilty to second-degree manslaughter with a sentence recommendation of one to three years.”
Robinson has been in jail since September 2021, so he has served 14 months and can technically be released.” (Source)
People Magazine and The New York Times (See here) covered the story.
This story never appeared in a Brooklyn newspaper because it happened in Manhattan. No politician in Brooklyn spoke out for Than Than Htwe or her family.
Than Than Htwe’s son must run that scene through his head over and over. Now he had to hear that the man who took his mother’s life only needs to be in jail for 1-3 years. #NoJustice
