Bay Ridge, The Adhan Will Be Played On Friday Afternoon and During Ramadan

Bells have been ringing at Christian churches for years. Many people like them, some people don’t.

Today, Mayor Adams said that Muslims will be allowed to play The Adhan (Call to Prayer) on Friday afternoons between 12:30 and 1:30 pm on speakers at “a reasonable standard.”

What does the Muslim prayer call sound like?

What is being said in the Adhan (announcement)?

Mosques will also be able to play The Adhan, during the month of Ramadan, which takes place from March 3, 2024 to April 19, 2024. The sound can only be used after 9:00 am.

Some people are bothered that prayers will be said over a loud speaker. Some are bothered that during Ramadan, prayers will be said several times a day over a loud speaker. On August 24th, Mark Stewart the Deputy Commissioner issued these guidelines.

a) Fajr prayer – early morning *No Adhan at this time because NYC said it can only start after 9:00 am

b) Dhur prayer around 1:00 pm

c) Asr prayer – around 5:00 pm

d) Maghrib prayer – these are the evening prayers at sunset

e) Isha prayer late evening – 8:00 or 9:00 pm

“The NYPD Community Affairs Bureau and local Muslim leaders will work with mosques across the city to communicate the new rules and ensure that any speakers used to broadcast the call to prayer will be set to the proper volume and follow the city’s noise code.” (Source)

In different areas across the United States, the Muslim Prayer Call is now being heard. (News)

In the Spring, a community in Astoria, Queens applied for a permit to have the Prayer Call played in Queens. The people were happy to hear the sound:

Councilman Justin Brannan did not stand with the Mayor to deliver this news. That is not good!

This is going to be a *big change* for people who live near a mosque in NYC.

On Fridays and during Ramadan, some people may need to close their windows if they don’t want to hear the Adhan.

Like the church bells, when it starts everyone will hear it, but eventually the sound blends into the sounds of the city and people don’t hear it.

Hugs,
marlene
