Rally Against the 63rd Street Nine-Story Building

Photos: Pauline Doll Castagna

Last night, residents in Brooklyn rallied on 63rd Street and 12th Avenue against a planned 9-story building. The main building on 12th Avenue was landmarked, so a nine story building should not be placed here.

Residents were glad so many leaders were present:

Councilwoman Alexa Aviles

Senator Iwen Chu

Assemblyman Lester Chang (represented by George Sarantopoulos)

Congresswoman Malliotakis (represented by Lori Windsor)

Also present was Josephine from Community Board 10, Fran Vella-Marrone from Dyker Heights Civic Association and the wonderful Guardians of the Guardians.

Vito LaBella recorded the rally because he wanted everyone to know what is going on:

Everyone in Brooklyn understands that change must happen here, but the residents are asking the developer to build within the character of the neighborhood.

The developer wants to max out in square footage to make money, but building within the character is important in Brooklyn. This happened on many streets in Sunset Park.

Hopefully, the NYC Landmarking Commission will remind the developer that this area can not be overdeveloped because the Angel Guardian Home is landmarked.

The old building that was present on this property was completely removed except for ONE WALL. This is not an alteration – this is a completely new building!

We all feel terrible for the residents on these blocks because different projects have been building on these blocks for several years.

Thank you to the organizers and attendees for standing up for Brooklyn!

We are thankful for the good people in Brooklyn who look out for their neighbors!

Kelly Carroll from the Historic District Council said she never saw a landmark designation like this, where pieces of the property were carved out. (Thank Senator Andrew Gounardes for that. Gounardes and Peter Abbate failed to show up at the Landmarking Meeting. They sent out-of-district Councilman Brannan.)

The building with the black box was partially removed before the Landmark Preservation Commissioners saw the property, so they were unable to preserve it. One Commissioner noted this in the landmarking hearing!

Not present at the rally: Senator Andrew Gounardes and Councilman Justin Brannan. Please do not say it isn’t Brannan’s district….it wasn’t Brannan’s district years ago and you didn’t say anything when Brannan overstepped here. (Info)
