Why is Bridgeview Diner in Bay Ridge Closed? Update: It reopened on 6/22

Update: The Bridgeview Dinner opened again on 6/22.

The Bridgeview Dinner closed early today and Bay Ridge was buzzing because the parking lot was also roped off.

A sign in the window said: Closed for Emergency Repairs. An employee of the Bridgeview Diner explained that they found a gas lead and they were fixing it. At the time, they didn’t know how long it would take to fix the gas leak.

* Strangely, we haven’t see any repair trucks there.

.

Hugs,
marlene

I was having breakfast at The Bridgeview diner, I guess it was well over 2 months ago, when 2 women were walking around the restaurant wearing badges that read “NYC Department of Health”. The 2 of them sat down at a booth and both of them got on their cell phones. Shortly thereafter, a hefty woman in a blue gas company uniform came in the front door with a sniffing devise. These 2 health department women met her at the door and escorted her into the kitchen. After a few minutes they all came out of the kitchen sat down at two different booths by the front window of the restaurant, the gas company woman got on her cell phone as she was writing in a notepad. I was eating my breakfast when a fire engine pulled up in front on Third Avenue, 3 firemen came in the building full equipped with oxygen tanks helmets and face shields. One of the health department women escorted the fireman to the back door of the kitchen. I asked the waiter if everything was OK, he told me it’s a “standard inspection”. The woman from the gas company she also went into the kitchen. A few minutes later the 3 firemen walked out of the kitchen, out the front door, walked to the fire truck, removed their equipment got in the truck and drove off. Shortly after that the gas company lady came out and sat down, still on the phone. I went to pay my check after leaving a tip on the counter, and I asked the pretty young lady who was the cashier/hostess what was going on? She said, “This is a very difficult lady from the health department.” She assured me that everything will be alright. The next time I went to the Bridgeview diner the sign you have posted was being displayed, it’s been two months now. I hope this business recovers. I’ve worked on 138 buildings, either, complete builds, renovations, modifications and alterations. Every time it involves upgrading, modifying, or modernizing the Natural Gas service to the building. How it works, a licensed plumber installs the gas lines to the apparatus that are served by natural gas. He puts in a meter hook up, supplies and installs a gas meter. Then he pressurizes the system with air, and tests for leaks. The Gas Company has to come into the building and inspect the system, then submit inspection documents to the NYC Dept of Buildings, then that inspector can either rubber stamp or send out field inspectors to double check the gas company.

There was a gas explosion in Greenwich Village some years ago where people were killed because of negligent and illegal natural gas connections. Since then, regulations in the City of New York had become much stricter. Steel gas pipes underground rust out and must be inspected regularly. New yellow plastic gas pipes, as you see in the streets all over the city, should last about 10,000 years.

I have never seen an existing business closed for so long for gas leak interruption, I don’t understand it myself. It is very strange

Thank you for sharing that. I didn’t realize they were closed for two months already.

I hope they are able to open again soon as so many people love meeting their family there.

I’m devastated! I bring my father to Sunset Park to get his acupuncture, or I drive him to his doctor on 5th and 87th, and I always stop by the Bridgeview for my breakfast while I wait for dad. It’s been over 2 months now…I’m so sorry for all the good, hardworking folks at Bridgeview who always make my visits there, and especially my breakfast, so amazing. I’m hoping they are all okay, that’s most important. But I’d love to see the diner opened again. I sure hope so….

I have eaten there for over 22 years.I am also a Union Plumber. At first,I saw them working on the street main. Can’t imagine the hold up. The servers and owners are like family to me.When I was in a nursing home,my roommate,Constantine, would have his son,Leo,from Casa Calamari, bring us food from Bridgeview, and his own restaurant.I am in need of “Rolled Apple Pancakes”!!!!!!!!!!
