Thankful for Those Who Spoke Up for the Incarcerated

When I read comments people were making about prisoners, I was glad I didn’t know those people.

I’ve never known anyone who went to jail. For whatever reason someone went to jail for, that doesn’t take away that they are human beings and they have rights. Some people who are at the prison are people who haven’t been arraigned, but can’t pay bail. The people in the jails are someone’s spouses, siblings and children of people.

It’s amazing that some Catholics will speak out against abortion, but then shun prisoners. If they read the Bible, they would know that God was very clear on this:  Proverbs 31:8-9—Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.

What happened this weekend at the MDC Brooklyn Federal Prison may have been spurred on by the federal shutdown. When they investigate, they will find out for sure.

What’s crazy scary about the prison situation is that whoever had jurisdiction over the warden didn’t appear until today. I’m just not sure who it was.

What happened there was so abusive and I hope the city make some moves to have someone in NYC have control over the prison.

I am thankful to Councilman Brannan for being one of the first and loudest voices; that’s why he is a great leader. Brannan was so early, that even reporters were using his video on television news reports. The area that the prison is located in is not in Brannan’s area, but he continued to update his social media all weekend with information so his constituents could see what was going on.

I am also grateful to Bay Ridge for Social Justice, Fight Back Bay Ridge and Yalla members for standing outside the prison in the cold and reminding people that even the incarcerated matter.

I was glad to see Senator Gounardes and Assemblywoman Frontus went to check on the situation as well.

Hugs,
marlene
