Seven Days Later, Brannan Responded To “Death to America” Video From 7/1 Rally
On July 1st, Palestinians in Bay Ridge held a Day of Rage. This was not the first time they had this rally, but it was a little later this year due to the pandemic. This year there were a lot of recordings of the event.
On July 3rd, this video was shared widely on social media. I was stunned. I never heard anyone say anything like that in Bay Ridge.
People tweeted Brannan and other leaders about the video. On Facebook, people tagged the politicians. None of the politicians said anything until today.
Today, July 11th, Councilman Justin Brannan made a statement in a private group on Facebook about the video – this is the first time he has said anything about it.
Why would it take a week for Councilman Brannan to speak out about this? When someone asked Brannan about that, he said:
A statement was made to the press? I didn’t find it online, but maybe he just gave it to them today. Brannan spends many hours online, it’s surprising he did not make this statement on his social media accounts.
Justin Brannan didn’t share this statement on social media – not Twitter or his Facebook page. Tonight on Twitter someone questioned why he didn’t speak out about that comment and Brannan sent the same overdue statement – see here
Even stranger, Brannan spoke about Arab-American leaders. I’m surprised that the person who applied for the permit for the event didn’t think the community deserved to hear from him or her.
Years ago, before Justin Brannan was elected, I noticed that he was the one who spoke out first about something happening. Now he’s one of the last. Most times when information is shared is when residents are sharing it with each other.
Senator Andrew Gounardes represents the area and he was also silent on the topic.
When someone chants, “Death to America” in Bay Ridge, I would expect anyone who was elected to represent the area to speak up and say it wasn’t acceptable…..right away.
Update: This evening, Councilman Brannan spoke out about the march for the NYPD held in Dyker Heights today because it involved Republicans. See here
Brannan wanted to blame the Republicans politicians for a group of men at the march acting inappropriately towards the counter protesters. News here
Hugs,
marlene
