RIP Erin Evenson…A Life Well-Lived

RIP Erin Evenson.

On Sunday, April 14, 2019 – Friends and family will gather to celebrate the life of Erin Evenson at the Danish Athletic Club at 735 – 65th Street from 1:00 to 4:00 PM. There will be a remembrance at 2:30 pm.  4/14 update here and another picture

She was only 46 years old.  I cried so hard when I saw the news that she died.

Erin loved cooking, recipes and beautiful plated dishes. She competed in cooking contests – some local ones and televised ones as well (which is so cool)! What an adventurous spirit she had to enter these contests!  Erin was considered a competitive home cook and even featured in  The Daily News and NY Post.

A few years ago, Erin won $100,000 for creating this original hamburger recipe. The description of  her recipe is here : “Her winning burger featured beef patties mixed with pancetta fat and basted in green curry glaze, crispy watercress salad, and fried pancetta, all sandwiched between toasted bun halves that get spread with minted basil aioli and dipped in chopped roasted cashews.”

I loved watching this video of Erin. She picked spices on her balcony off her cute Brooklyn kitchen. I loved how she stood next to her bookcase packed with recipe books. Erin cooked cod and it looked elegant.

I loved how Erin described her location…*Bay Ridge, Bklyn via Chicago*  My two favorite places in the world. It was obvious she appreciated her Norwegian, Swedish and Irish roots.

Erin saw the beauty in ordinary things. She posted the most interesting photos with captions to make people smile. I laughed when I saw this one…..there were so many times she made me laugh. She saw the humor in life.  When Erin’s family was selling their home in IL, Erin joked that the house came “as is” with the ghost in the attic!

I didn’t know that bodega cats” were a thing, until I saw Erin loving them. She really loved cats. I’m allergic to cats, but Erin made me love bodega cats too.

Erin loved music, the way people loved music while I was growing up. Each year she shared a lists of the best songs from the year.  I loved seeing  her new lists each year.

While Erin shared things online, she wasn’t consumed by social media. She was too busy living – enjoying art, music, her friends and food  – the way people are supposed to love and enjoy their life.

Erin was involved in the Bay Ridge politics and she was a proud member of the Bay Ridge Democrats. Erin participated and helped organize some Bay Ridge community events to help others as well.  She was proud of Chris for running for this community. (We were too).

When Justin Brannan ran for NYC Council, there was this pic of Erin, Chris and their cats. Everyone who saw it, couldn’t get over how much it resembled Erin and Chris.

Each year, around Erin’s birthday they traveled to some place amazing. This Fall, they went to Spain. Erin shared pictures of all the little fancy plates of food….everything – even a plate of snails was so cute. Someone wrote that they lived vicariously through Erin’s travel photos and I thought – yes, I did too. I’m not a fan of Facebook, but I loved looking at Erin’s posts.

Erin loved well. In photos of Erin and the love of her life, Chris McCreight,  they are beautiful – so radiant as they traveled and they explored the world together. At the end of this video – start at 6:55, Chris tried the food Erin made.  Even though the clip is short, his love for her is apparent. As they stood in a kitchen with a person videotaping them, it was like they were alone and “it’s just them.”

Sometimes Erin posted pictures of food she made or purchased for lunch.  Then there were times she posted a pictures of dinner that Chris made – like a hearty bowl of soup on a freezing cold evening.  It was obvious that they took care of each other and she appreciated the simple things too.

Prayers for Chris, Erin’s family and friends.  Erin’s friends wrote messages about her life – all of them are remarking about the kind person she was.

3/6 Update: I hadn’t  looked at Erin’s FB page since mid-February, but today I clicked on it and red the beautiful memories of this sweet woman.  I saw this old picture from 2006 and it made me cry again. Erin left way to early, but I’m glad she loved and was loved well.
