Volunteering & Donating in Bay Ridge

Thanksgiving Prep Volunteering:

 

1) Catholic Charities in Brooklyn needs help on November 16th – they are giving out turkeys and the fixings!

 

 

 

2) Bay Ridge Cares posted their Thanksgiving volunteer opportunities. Bay Ridge Cares serves and deliver meals to the less fortunate, the disabled, shut ins, and seniors. There are opportunities to volunteer for the whole family.

 

3) Grandma’s Love 347-432-2408 – Help Grandma’s Love package bags of food that are sent home with children on the weekends and of course near Thanksgiving as well. Theresa Monforte-Caraballo, the head of Grandma’s Love wanted to make sure that not do families eat, but that children make memories and they can talk with their classmates about their Thanksgiving dinner. (When I read that, I cried….it takes a lot to make me cry). Both children and adults can volunteer here.

 

4) Volunteer at the Reaching Out Community Food Pantry 7708 New Utrecht Avenue – sign up here

 

5) God’s Love We Deliver– the non-profit organization founded in 1985 with the goal of bringing tasty, nutritious meals to the homes of cancer patients, AIDS sufferers and others coping with life-threatening illnesses, marked a major milestone this year. They packed meals for people in Bay Ridge see here

 

 

6) Chips Soup Kitchen in Park Slope 200 4th Avenue – it’s between Sackett & Degraw Streets. Call Janice, the Director of Food Services at (718) 237-2962 to discuss when you can begin volunteering at CHiPS.

 

 

November Opportunity – Decorating

Saint Athanasius –  2154 – 61st Street – needs volunteers to help decorate outside of their church (announced in the 11/18 bulletin)

 

December 1st opportunity

December 2nd and 3rd Volunteer Opportunity

Help is needed at Saint Andrew’s Christmas Sale. People are needed to work in the kitchen, to sell raffles and help out on Saturday and Sunday, December 2nd  and 3rd . To volunteer, please call the Parish House to leave a message for Sr. Pat Reilly or Loretta Migliore with your name, phone number and availability.  718- 680-1010

 

 

 

Other Volunteer Opportunities in Bay Ridge:

 

 

1) Volunteer at Bay Ridge Center Food Pantry 411 Ovington Avenue – the last Wednesday of the month from 10 to 3 pm – the Center needs volunteers who can translate Cantonese to help people visiting the food pantry.

 

2) Holy Cross Church on 84th and Bay Ridge Pkwy cooks meals for those who are homebound or have financial difficulties. Meals are cooked on one Saturday each month starting at 11:00 am. Volunteers are needed to shop for food, prep, cook and deliver the food. More info here. Once a month (on a Friday evening), volunteers feed the homeless on the streets of NYC. 718-836-3510

5) The Salvation Army in Bay Ridge needs Bell Ringers for the 2018 Christmas Season – someone could have a very good time with this.

 

 

**You can sign up to stand at one of the Salvation Army Kettles and ring the bell with your service club: Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, church groups, employees, high school students needing community service. Just reach out to 718-238-2991 and let them know when you are avilable.

 

 

6) Saint Patricks Church asked for volunteers for both the Christmas Angel Gift Drive (help with collecting the gifts), as well as forvolunteers on the second Sunday of each month to sell Fair Trade products (coffee). Saint Pats is on 4th Avenue and 95th Street

 

 

7) If you like cats, The Itty Bitty Kitty Committee needs people who can help clean up cages and socialize kittens during this week and weekend, sometime between 9 am and 4 pm. Fill out the form here or call Dagny at 609-410-3405, if you can help.

9) Volunteer at Narrows Community Garden on Shore Road if you enjoy gardening and nature – there is more than just planting and gardening to do.

11) Saint Athanasius Community Outreach Program needs volunteers to cook and serve food to the homeless on Saturday morning.

 

 

 

 

12) Volunteer to visit senior citizens in Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst who could use a visitor. Sign up here

18) If you know another language, the Brooklyn Public Library is looking for volunteers.

 

 

19) Places where children 6+ and their parents can volunteer to help out in Brooklyn.

Places in Bay Ridge that need Thanksgiving canned food:

  • St. Philips Episcopal Church located at 1072 80th Street does a canned food drive each year for the Bay Ridge Senior Center.

  • Foodtown 9105 – 3rd Avenue has paired with St. Patrick’s Church and the have bags of food for neighborhood family’s in need this season. The bags are right next to customer service and are about $10 each (you bring the bag to register and they ring up the items inside). After you buy the bag, they staple it shut and then it gets put in a bin to be transferred to the Bay Ridge Food Pantry so it can be distributed to families for the holidays.

 

  • Bay Ridge Center 411 Ovington Avenue – Many seniors go their on the last Wednesday of the month from 10 to 3 pm – that’s when it is open

 

  • St Andrews Pantry – 6713 Ridge Boulevard. You can also drop off food at the rectory next door to the church

 

 

  • St. Patrick’s Pantry – Bring food to the main office of the Rectory – 4th Avenue and 96th Street

 

  • St. Anselm’s Pantry 351 – 83rd Street. This pantry is open on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month only from 10 am – 1 pm

 

  • Saint Athanasius 2154 61st Street
