Things Aren’t What They Seem Sometimes

When you watch this video, you will feel upset that this happened in our community.

I didn’t share it yesterday because it was a just a short video clip. Why were the police so angry?

While the man pretended to be a peaceful protester, it’s clear the police are upset.

Social media began the trial for the police officers. One person offered: “This is Assault in the Second Degree by the cops. Tasered and assaulted. Mandatory minimum 2 years prison. Maximum 7. They won’t even get disciplined.”

The police were in the wrong because people judged the whole situation by a tiny clip.

No one asked, “What happened before that?”

Then we saw this video this morning:

Most annoying in the video is that the police are speaking with the man and telling him not to throw the helmet. Yet, he still did – while the police watched him. Was that being peaceful?

Is this enough of a reason to taze the man? We don’t know what went on before these two bits of video, but the 68th Precinct officers saw they weren’t able to talk this man down.

I wish Councilman Brannan wasn’t so quick to judge the police department. He should know better as he isn’t a new leader.

Update: August 11, 2020:  A man who was recently involved in an incident was found because “he shouted in another cop’s ear with a bullhorn at a subsequent protest, in Bay Ridge.”  See story about Derrick Ingram here.

Actually, Brannan isn’t any type of leader.

    Hi Marlene,

“No one asked, ‘what happened before that?’” Do you also wonder what happened before Robert Bolden threw the helmet? **It is important to ask yourself/unpack why you are more concerned about Black people’s response/resistance to white supremacy than white supremacy itself.**

    Morgan,

Everyone has the right to protest. No one has the right to show up at a protest and ignore the police. You can believe what you want, but this isn’t a lawless society. The police asked the man to stop. Neither you or I know what went on between when those two videos were taped, but all that was presented to the community was one video which made everyone feel sympathetic to the man. Even a political leader went to blame the police without wondering why they were upset or what happened minutes before a short clip. When the other video came out, people understood why the police were upset.

The protest wasn’t about Black Lives Matter – it was a fight between two political groups. When it’s a Black Lives Matter protest, SO MANY people have gone out of the way to make sure it is peaceful so people can see and hear them. When it turns violent, people are turned off to the message. The presence of antifa at this protest changed things quite a bit.

Morgan (but that’s not your name girl. Yes, I know you. How’s Cape Cod?),

Unpack this – you don’t want people to see videos of things that happened in this community.

These aren’t my videos, but I WILL discuss them because it happened here. Anyone visiting this blog is interested in what is happening in this neighborhood. Everyone is tired of living in the dark and political people trying to hide the truth.

Please stop pretending this was about BLM. It’s wasn’t.

This was a political event by groups whose focus isn’t ours. (When I say ours, I mean mine and the community – not your political group).

If you were speaking for BLM, you would have been all over this. INSTEAD, you keep returning to an old blog post because I linked to a video.

Step back and you will see you aren’t helping BLM. Many people are working to make changes for equality and what you are doing is setting back the movement – especially in our neighborhood. Hopefully, you will be more considerate and intentional in the future.
