    Labor Day

Labor Day means the start of school is here. I am excited to begin a new year. This will be my 15th year teaching and I smile when I think about meeting a whole new set of excited 6th graders. Many people like to think of January 1st as a time for a new year. [...]

    Back to School

After being off for 11 days, I dreaded going back. I mean I love teaching, but it is so much fun to be off and free. But I have really enjoyed the first two days of school. It’s nice to see my students maturing. Spring is a time for everything blossoming!

Sweet Day of a Brooklyn Teacher

All the classes in my school are doing community service projects each month. My class wanted to clean litter from the street/parks in Brooklyn, but it’s chilly and I wanted an indoor activity! So I asked if anyone had a family member in the military. One of my students had a brother in the army in [...]

Are Your Children Proud to Be Americans?

Normally, I leave out stories about my students out of this blog. I talk to many students one-on-one each day and I don’t want them to think I write about what was said between us. Yet, today, I chit chatted with a student who was in my homeroom last year. Homeroom teachers have a special [...]

    Germs – Yuck

The teachers at my school wanted to encourage students to do more community service, so we are all doing a service project with our homeroom.  Our students and their families are always so generous when we have food drives and other collections. Yet, we wanted Since they are middle school students, it’s a good idea [...]

Back to School Tips for Moms from a Teacher

It’s the second full week of school here in Brooklyn! Parents are usually very enthusiastic about school the first week. After that, they assume that their child can handle the school day. Yet many children have difficulty adjusting after a long relaxing vacation. School work, homework and after school activities are a big change from [...]

    Life gets busy in September

I forgot how busy everything gets in September. I don’t have as much time to read blogs and enjoy myself online. Besides school taking up many hours of my day,  real estate agents are calling as  more houses in Bay Ridge seem to have become available and prices keep falling. I just I had more [...]

    Mr. Owl in my classroom

I got these adorable wall decorations from the Scribble It Etsy Shop and put them up in my classroom. They were so easy and fun to put up. You just rub it into the wall – too cool. Some cute chicks And a very sweet bird which I got from a very cool shop online. [...]

    Week one down

School started out well this week. I’m glad my students are so happy and ambitious. Although the day goes fast, I’m not in the swing of things yet and I feel very tired at the end of the day. I need a nap, but we are having some friends over so sleep will need to [...]

    Very Sweet Day

I can’t explain how much I love the beginning of the school year. Big, bright eyes and giggly smiles enter my classroom and make me laugh all day. I am probably one of the luckiest teachers alive. I teach at a gifted school in Brooklyn. The parents of these children have done everything they can [...]

    The Magic is Starting

The beginning of the school year is always magical for me. It’s going to be my 15th year teacher. When I thought about it this summer, I thought wow 15 years and it didn’t feel like anything exciting was going to happen. Yet, today I was told I will be teaching two Spanish classes in [...]
