BR Rape Suspect – Freed Without Bail in April

Update: The suspect is being held $200k bail  – see here

Today, local journalists wrote about the sexual assault of an 85-year-old woman in Bay Ridge, but failed to tell about the man’s background.

What type of reporter leaves out the background of the perp?

Mario Pope, was arrested and charged with attempted rape,  sex abuse, forcible touching, break-in and unlawful imprisonment. (Source)

In April 2020, Mario Pope was arrested and freed without bail for charges of assault and aggravated harassment.

Emily Davenport, journalist from the Brooklyn Paper doesn’t want you to know that. Many people in Bay Ridge were questioning if this was a first-time offender, but not Emily Davenport. (See article here) A Bay Ridge resident left a message to comments too).

Jamie De Jesus at the Brooklyn Reporter also failed the man’s background in his article today.

Journalists outside of Brooklyn had no problem telling us:

1)  “He arrested on April 27 on assault and harassment charges in Harlem, but was released without bail at his arraignment.” (Source)

2) “Court records show that Pope was freed without bail in April after being arrested on charges of assault and aggravated harassment.”  (Source)

3) “Pope was free without bail after an April arrest for harassment and assault.”  (Source)

4)  “Pope was released without bail after an April arrest for intimidation and assault.”   (Source)

This is the second time woman in Bay Ridge was the victim of a sexual assault by a man  released because of bail reform.

See how close the two sexual assaults are:

In February 2020, a man attacked a woman in the bathroom at the 95th Street Station. He tried to pull off the woman’s pants as she fought her off.  A good Samaritan knocked on the door and he ran out.  The Daily News noted that man was released due to bail reform.

In February, not one politician spoke out for the Bay Ridge woman.

So far, all that was reported was that a person was arrested. Not convicted. There’s a big difference. And if that person was freed *without bail* that may mean there wasn’t a good case against him.

    Jim,

Where did convicted come from? I didn’t use that word. I wrote: “Matthew Pope, was arrested and charged with attempted rape,  sex abuse, forcible touching, break-in and unlawful imprisonment.” I got that from the newspaper.

Bail is different now. A lot of people haven’t done their research on and and don’t even know what bail reform started. It started in January 2020. The Jewish Community immediately felt the harm of bail reform and a new law was put in to change bail reform. This article can explain how it affected a woman in our area:
