Wattrush.com

My credit card info was stolen by someone who made a purchase at http://www.wattrush.com    $9.96 was spent. I have no idea on what, but I have found several other people who use a Bank of America credit card also had the same problem. I refuted the charges with Bank of America.

The deadbeats who own wattrush.com have only owned it since June 30, 2010:

Many other people had fraudulent charges from Wattrush on their account. They found this blog post and left comments which really helped me understand some things about how it may happened. Thank you to all those who left comments. I encourage others to leave them as well because Bank of America has been to this site several times now probably to investigate (I see it in my log).

At first I thought my credit card must have been compromised from a website whose security was lax. I used my card for items from Amazon.com, Max Makeup, Pottery Barn, JCPenney and Paypal. Some people used these sites as well, but most did not. One person reported that his wife never used that card online. I also have a linked google account, but most people I spoke with didn’t.

Then I thought I had a virus on my computer which may have caused it. I scanned with several programs -> Nothing. I spoke to another person who had fraudulent charges as well. He has a Mac and there are very few viruses a Mac can collect.

I only have two other explanations: The first -> A key logging program was installed on a computer I used and stole the card numbers. I couldn’t find any evidence of this. Then again, a person commented that their wife never used this card online so that sort of rules this one out.

The last explanation….PNC and Bank of America card holders are the only ones who experienced this theft. The banks joined forces to purchase Merill Lynch and may have related networks.  I do believe this is a bank breach of computer security.

If anyone uses a different type of card, can you please leave a comment.

If I could figure out where the breach happened, I would put together a class action suit.

October 2010 edit……If you were wondering what was purchased with your card. One person found that a cell phone battery was purchased from Wattrush. Read the comments below to hear about her experience calling Wattrush and the sultry voiced woman she spoke with.

Hugs,
marlene

Hi! I found your blog by searching wattrush.com as this just happened to us this week, too! The charge to our account was $7.91…that doesn’t even cover shipping, but it was unauthorized all the same. Glad to hear you’ve gotten resolution.

    Amy,

Hope you are getting resolution and have changed your card as well. The person who used my card also attempted to access my account online, but was unable to.

I bank with Bank of America and I think it may have something to do with that. The rep told me that the person who did this was checking to make sure the card worked before they did a major purchase.

I found someone online who also had this happen to him and he has a Macintosh computer, so we know it wasn’t a spyware problem. He also had a Bank of America card.

I bank with PNC Bank and my debit/credit card was just recently charged with a wattrush.com purchase for $12. So its not just Bank of America.

We also bank with PNC Bank and after we reported our bank card with unauthorized charges, they refunded the $7.91. We still have a $13.00 misc charge pending for a “Q Enterprises, Inc.” but they can refute that until the merchant processes the charge. Luckily we all discovered this rather quickly! If you try to call wattrush.com, it’s a bogus answering machine.

No google-linked account here. I use my card mostly with paypal/EBAY, Old Navy, Bath & Body, LLBean, buy.com…but, this all happened with my husband’s card (weird!. I recently used his card online at The Children’s Place and American Girl company.

A friend of mine asked me if I used her card today as she found a charge for 9.80 on her PNC account processed at 9 something this morning. Than at 2 that afternoon there was another charge still pending from a lily e enterprises. She called the bank, and was also told that the card will be changed and when the charges are through their pending stages it would be reviewed, and refunded (if legitimate). The card (as far as I know) has only been used for her ebay account, but she does a lot of her banking online (with the proper security) so this is particularly baffling to us.

A follow-up: just checked my PNC account online this morning & the $13 pending charge from Q Enterprises, Inc. “vanished”…PNC bank refunded my $7.50 card replacement fee and credited the $7.91 bogus charge from wattrush.com.

A good lesson that there is always someone out there trying to scam others who aren’t one step ahead of them!

I have Bank of America and this happened to me as well. Stumbled upon your blog when I googled “Wattrush.” Thank you for posting about it. I have only online shopped ONCE! Literally! I did it 3 months ago because my perfume is only available online. So, it’s a pretty crazy chance that I got “hacked.”
    Thanx again.

Thanks for posting this! I noticed a charge from WATTRUSH.COM this morning while I was looking over my account. I’m with Bank of America as well. The charge was for $9.89 and I’m positive I’ve never shopped there. Fortunately Bank of America was very accommodating in helping me to file a dispute.

There was also another charge that they couldn’t figure out. I’m not sure if it’s related but it happened right around the same time as the WATTRUSH.COM charge appeared. This charge was labeled as being from “PETER W BAUER AGE WILLIAMSPORT FL” for $10.00 — Anyone else get that one?

    Hey,

I found your post when googling “Wattrush.” I had a charge for $9.87 to my Bank of America debit card. The last thing I used my debit card for was a Google Checkout purchase through TheNerds.net. I also have a second anomalous $10 charge from “MCCORMICK & SCHMIDT”; both charges were on 7/26 and both (according to the Bank of America rep) came through at about 6 in the morning. Thanks for posting to reaffirm my suspicions that something is up.

I’ve seen those Russian e-mails. I don’t remember opening them. But Wattrush’s hosting site is Russian. I will look into it.

    Jackie,

Yes, change your card because they have access to your account. Bank of America Associate said they try to do two small amounts and then one large.

I got a charge for $9.81 from wattrush.com on my USAA card on 7/28 which I did not authorize/make. I also had a pending charge for $14, a couple days prior, and I don’t recall the name of the merchant, but I wish I did. Since it was “pending” I decided to just watch it, and sure enough, it dropped off – the odd merchant name and amt, though, are similar to what others have reported above. I did cancel my account and got a new one. I shop online a lot, but stick to well-known merchants (Amazon, eBay).

I found your web site this morning after reviewing my Bank of America account and found a $9.88 pending charge from Wattrush.com as well. I called my bank and had them cancel my debit card. I noticed this charge and another charge from Lewis H. Worrad Co. Stuart UT FOR $13.00. These two debits happened shortly after I placed an online order with Herrington Catalog Co., and I don’t know who these companies are. Bank of America will refund my money back as soon as these two charges go through since they are in the pending stages now. I am glad that you set up this site and I hope that these clowns will be caught for their frudulent activity. If I find out anything that can aid us all in discovering how this happened I will let you know. Thank you for putting up this site.

My wife’s Bank of America Visa/Debit card had a charge from wattrush.com for $9.80 on 8/2/10. She has never bought anything online, and she does not use her computer – just sits on the desk collecting dust. I think it is an internal Bank of America problem. They blocked her card on or before 7/31/10 – before we even knew there was a problem. They know there is a wattrush.com problem.

This also happened to me. A charge for $9.68. I could not find anything online other than this website about WATTRUSH.COM. I called Wachovia and they advised me to contact the merchant at 803-282-9850. The number goes directly to an answering service — go figure. I have been referred to the fraud department to get all of my information changed. The card company alerted me and I told them I didn’t make those purchases. They cancelled my card and issued me a new one. It took 14 days to arrive and I’ve only had it for less than two weeks when this purchase from WATTRUSH.com showed up on 8/16. The card company says I must have made a purchase and forgot about it. I can’t believe that charges are going through at ANY bank. Wattrush is a company that is committing fraud and 100’s of people are looking at this site everyday including the banks in different states. More than 10 Bank of America representatives from different states have viewed this website.

I withdrew most of my money from Bank of America because I do feel that the card was compromised in the banks computers. I have been using my card in well known sites for many years and have never had a problem.

Wachovia customer. Same thing happened to me, but I caught it while it was still “pending.”

It’s pretty obvious that these guys are criminals. It’s not necessarily your bank’s fault, nor yours. The only fault that your bank has is that they don’t flag these OBVIOUSLY false charges automatically. My guess is that is why BoA and Wachovia customers are getting charged. Their security of preventing false charges is lacking.

I tried calling the Amerohitech company and the VM was bogus. No one ever returned calls. All charges were less than $10. The first charge was 7/26, then 9/16, and wattrush was 9/18. I use USAA-mastercard. I just had a $9.95 charge from Amerohitech.com and a $1.22 pending charge from Lenscrafters. I called USAA, and everything is being taken care of-new cards, etc. My recent purchases were BabiesRUs.com and coffeecow.com. I don’t see anyone else here w/ those purchases..The same thing happened to me a year or two ago as well. I don’t even shop online that much! Thanks for the blog. It’s a shame I’m not the only one, but at the same time, it’s nice to know it’s not just me!

I am dismayed that this is still happening. I cancelled my cards and got new ones in mid August. And I called the card issuers who said they would look into Wattrush. I also called Amazon but they claimed to be Caesar’s wife and above suspicion.
There has been a howl of protest by all viewers of this web site, there have been State law suits in Illinois and apparently a Federal investigation if I interpret the NY Times article correctly, and yet? So why is Wattrush still getting away with this?

Edward – I don’t understand how banks are continuing to allow this payment to go through. It’s frustrating to see that thieves haven’t been stopped even though this has been reported for over two months. Wattrush has been reported as a fraudulent company and numerous banks (including Bank of America and Wachovia) representatives have visited this site repeatedly.

All I can think is that the Banks aren’t concerned with these small amounts and that’s why all the charges have been for under $10

I just had the charge of 9.98 on my BOA card as well. Looks like a cheap 1gb MP3 player is what is being purchased. I called Wattrush (803) 282-9850 to tell them. did not get through. BOA is “working” on it too.

I bank with USAA Federal Savings Bank. This morning I checked my account and found two unauthorized debit card purchases. The first from wattrush.com for $9.85 and the second from a place called T ELECTRIC for $10.00. There must be a commonality between all of these fraudulant purchases aside from wattrush.com…I am glad my bank is so diligent about taking care of their people.

I just got off the phone with BoA’s Claims department and the new card is on it’s way. Found a charge from wattrush.com for $9.87 and decided to call them. A very sultry and shady-sounding woman found my “purchase” and apparently I had placed an order for a Motorola phone battery – I don’t even own a Motorola phone. I tried them back a second time and ever since then have been going straight to VM. Also had a second charge from Top O Hill Quality UT for $15.00 that was pending for 3 days and then just disappeared – Definitely seems as though someone was testing out my account. I use my BoA card online, but I have a Mac, secured internet, and only use secure sites. The breach of security certainly seems likely. Thanks for the post.

Add another one to the list. The Bank of America Fraud Department called me about a charge from Paul somebody in Minnesota (I was in Ft. Lauderdale at the time). When I checked my account, low and behold there was a wattrush.com charge there as well for $9.68, BOA cancelled my debit card.

Your original post starts this summer so it’s a shame the bank hasn’t been able to get a hold of this problem in September, October or November. It’s annoying to have your bank account compromised and it makes you wonder what other information Bank of America leaked. I’m surprised that no one from the Bank has commented on this blog Marlene. Thanks you everyone for sharing your experience.

BOA customer, phasing out however and bit embarrased to say only JUST cathing a $9.59 charge from September 2, 2010…hardly use the account any more, just sat down to balance for taxes and found this. Has anyone done an analysis on how many effected are BOA customers? I’m done with them after 25 YEARS business, 1/2 million in savings with them and 4 mortgages. Chase is now our bank. Tks for your blog! Curious how this happened.

It is a matter of sorrow that your debit card was stolen and it was also used.It seem that your card was stolen by a near someone who knows your password.Every body use password for protection.
